The Magic is in the Macros

When I started weight lifting (in 2023), I had one goal: I wanted to get stronger as I got older. To further help my body composition, I was told to count my macros instead of calories. I knew nothing about macros.

So I avoided.

What I now know to be true: There is Magic in the Macros. If you have a great little app, you can “figure” your macros easily and quickly.

And your body composition will absolutely change.

Before I go into the why, let me share a few stories with you.

Lynnette

Lynette, a homeschooling mom in Nebraska, had been eating 1,000 calories a day. One thousand.

And she was holding onto her weight—especially around her middle. Her body felt stuck. Defensive. Inflamed.

When she started with The FASTer Way to Fat Loss, she began tracking her macros and learning how to do some intermittent fasting. She ate more. She increased protein. She balanced her carbs. She stopped fearing healthy fats.

Along with the macros, she added workouts that were PAIRED to whatever she was eating that day. (She now loves her strong arms!)

She lost 25 pounds.

Not by starving herself.
But by fueling her body properly.

Lisa

Lisa had set 1,500 calories as her target per day for years. Always 1,500. She was also ALWAYS hungry and ALWAYS over her goal.

When she shifted to macro tracking, something fascinating happened:

“Macro tracking helps me eat better, curb the hunger, come in UNDER 1,500 calories, and lose weight!”

People. She has lost 13 pounds.

Less calories.
Different composition of food.
Better result.

Niki

Niki was already lean. She was in competition prep and wanted that last bit to fall from her midsection.

She tracked her macros, which actually required her to eat MORE (can I get an amen?), but it wasn’t random; she ate the right things at the right time.

Her extra weight melted off.

Not because of less food.
But because of strategic fuel.

So why? Why is there magic in the macros?

Calories Tell You How Much.

Macros Tell You What.

Calories are simply a measure of energy. They tell you how much food you’re eating.

Macros—short for macronutrients—tell you what that food is made of:

  • Protein

  • Carbohydrates

  • Fats

And your body does very different things with each one.

When you only focus on calories, you can technically hit your number while eating foods that leave you:

  • Hungry

  • Tired

  • Bloated

  • Moody

  • Stalled

But when you balance your macros? Everything changes.

Why Are Macros “Magical”?

They aren’t actually magic.

They are metabolic alignment.

When your macros are balanced:

Protein

  • Keeps you full

  • Supports muscle

  • Stabilizes blood sugar

  • Protects your metabolism

Protein is especially powerful for women in their 40s and 50s. As estrogen shifts, muscle naturally declines. If we don’t intentionally build and protect muscle, our metabolism slows. Protein is non-negotiable, baby.

Carbohydrates

  • Give you energy

  • Power your lifts

  • Improve recovery

  • Support thyroid function

Carbs are not the enemy. They are fuel. When used strategically, they help you train harder, recover better, and regulate stress hormones.

Fats

  • Support hormone production

  • Nourish brain health

  • Help absorb vitamins A, D, E, and K

  • Promote satiety

Going too low in fat can wreak havoc on hormones, mood, and skin. Your body needs healthy fats to thrive.

Why Calorie-Only Dieting Backfires

You can hit a calorie number with any sort of “food”. And technically stay “on plan.”

But without adequate protein and healthy fats, you may experience:

  • Blood sugar crashes

  • Evening cravings

  • Poor sleep

  • Bloating

  • Mood swings

  • Stubborn belly fat

Your body doesn’t just care about how much you eat. It cares about what you eat. This has been the surprise of my life, if I’m being honest.

When macros are balanced, women often report:

  • Better mood

  • Better digestion

  • Deeper sleep

  • More strength

  • Less inflammation

  • A flatter midsection

It’s sooooo cool.

The Midsection Mystery

Why does balancing macros often impact belly fat?

I know this gets a little detailed, but it’s important to understand:

  1. Higher protein supports muscle, which increases metabolic rate.

  2. Stable blood sugar reduces insulin spikes, which influence fat storage.

  3. Adequate carbs lower stress when timed around workouts.

  4. Healthy fats support hormone balance—critical in perimenopause and menopause.

When stress hormones drop and muscle rises, the midsection responds.

Not overnight. But it happens.

In fact, the reason I am sharing all of this today; I was getting dressed this morning and paused, looking at my body in the mirror. I am 59-years old and I have muscles now, and my waistline is becoming a waistline. It’s awesome.

Structure Creates Freedom

I cannot eat willy-nilly. I have to have some sort of plan, or I will eat all of the food all of the time. I used to eat Keto but never felt aligned. Macro Tracking has been my jam. And it gives me what my body needs.

When women understand what their bodies need, they stop guessing.

They stop under-eating.
They stop fearing food.
They stop chasing the next diet (which is a different freedom in and of itself).

They gain clarity, confidence, energy.

There is something powerful about eating the right amount of these macronutrients and watching your body thank you.

The Real Magic

It’s in alignment (my new favorite word).

It’s in giving your body what it actually needs—in the right proportion.

If you want to build muscle, stability, strength…
If you want to reduce bloat and inflammation…

It might not be about eating less.

It might be about eating smarter.

The magic is in the macros.

And maybe the next step isn’t to figure it all out on your own…
but to step into a little guidance and see what’s possible.

Because knowing is one thing.
Living it—walking it out in your actual, everyday life—is another.

That’s why I’m inviting you to join me.

We’re starting a 3-week round of The FASTer Way on February 23rd.

Just enough time to learn what your body actually needs.
Just enough time to see how it feels to fuel yourself well.
Just enough time to decide if this way of living is for you.

Nothing crazy, just a clear path, a little structure, and a whole lot of support.

You don’t have to wonder anymore.

You can try it and experience it for yourself!
